Cult Wines International Notes: Château Lafon-Rochet is a historic Saint-Estèphe estate with a lineage dating back to the 17th century, though it was the Tesseron family’s acquisition in 1960 that catalyzed its modern renaissance. Guy Tesseron, a renowned cognac producer, famously rebuilt the château and revitalized the vineyards, which are distinguished by their bright yellow facade and high proportion of Merlot for the appellation. As a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate is situated on a privileged gravel hilltop adjacent to Cos d’Estournel and Lafite Rothschild. By the early 1990s, the winery was benefitting from significant technical investments, emphasizing a style that combined the rugged, structural power of Saint-Estèphe with a refined, supple elegance. The 1993 growing season in Bordeaux was a complex and challenging vintage that rewarded producers with exceptional terroir and rigorous vineyard management. The year began with a mild, wet spring that led to an early and successful flowering, but the summer was characterized by fluctuating temperatures and high humidity. While August provided much-needed heat to advance ripening, the harvest was famously disrupted by heavy rains in September. At Lafon-Rochet, the deep gravel soils and efficient drainage were critical in preventing the fruit from becoming waterlogged. Despite the inclement weather during picking, the estate’s strict selection process resulted in a wine with firm tannins and a savory, classic profile. The 1993 vintage is noted for its traditional “Left Bank” character, showing impressive resilience and a structured longevity that has allowed it to age gracefully in the cellar.
